Where do you stand with German?

The 6 German levels explained

A1

Beginner

You understand and use very common everyday expressions. You can introduce yourself and ask simple questions. This is the starting level of the Goethe-Zertifikat.

A2

Elementary

You understand sentences on familiar topics. You can describe your family, your habits and your immediate environment.

B1

Intermediate

You get by in most everyday situations in a German-speaking country. You can describe experiences and briefly explain your opinions.

B2

Upper Intermediate

You understand the main ideas of complex texts and interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency. Required level for many Swiss employers.

C1

Advanced

You express yourself fluently and spontaneously. You use German flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes.

C2

Mastery

You understand with ease virtually everything you hear or read. You can summarise information from different spoken and written sources fluently and precisely.
